In our history, our Promised land has changed from one place to another. There was a point in time when Judaism and Mormonism were one religion, and the Promised land was in the Middle East, more specifically Israel. But eventually, as the Jews began to sin, a particular righteous family, who also was the prophet's family, received revelation that there was a new Promised land overseas. This was America.
It is kind of ideal to think that as well. I mean, in a way, America is geographically isolated. The South is very hot, and the North is very cold. Both East and West are protected by water. Because of these geographical advantages, the U.S. has managed to become a major country very hard to attack.
Yes, according to the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), America is considered to be a promised land. Mormons believe that America was chosen by God as a place where the restoration of the gospel and the establishment of the true Church would take place. However, it should be noted that this belief does not imply any superiority over other nations or people.

It was the belief of many Europeans that America would offer new opportunities and was the second "Promised Land", as in the Bible.

Yes, but it was much more than that. The period in the Holy Land was when the Prophets were active, when the Tabernacle at Shiloh and then the Holy Temple stood, and (after the Judges) when the Davidic Monarchy was in place.
