Like Oklahoma (which is also not a Midwestern state), it is sometimes referred to as part of the Midwest in lay speech, but technically speaking, the Midwest is the 12-state region consisting of North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
