George III. was a member of the House of Hannover. He was the grandson of George II. and King of Hannover since 1814. Born in London he led unlike his two predecessors an ideal family life. As he was a real Englishman he could strengthen the royal position again and by the time even achieved some popularity. His foreign policy was less lucky. He expulsed Pitt the Elder from government at the benefit of incapable Lord Bute in 1761. His sternly conservative attitude caused the secession of the 13 North-American colonies. Due to his declining health George had furthermore only little political influence even when the fight against France began in 1793. He rejected the Catholic emancipation for Ireland which Pitt had promoted forcing Pitt to resign in 1801. His incurable mental illness necessitated the regency of the Prince of Wales, the later George IV., as of 1810 until the death of George III. in 1820.
