Lava is molten rock expelled by a volcano. The volcanoes on Hawaii pour out lava, which sometimes flows down to the sea, and as it hardens, new land is added to the island, so it gets bigger. Does it happen every day? Maybe not, but it happens often and has been doing so for a long time. That's why the islands are there in the first place.

∙ 12y agoAt the moment the main island is on balance getting slightly bigger as lava from the volcano has been pouring into the sea for some years now.
However, if the past pattern is followed the main island volcano will eventually stop erupting and the processes of erosion will begin to win. At the same time a new Hawaiian island will form the the south and east of the present big island (this can already be seen beneath the ocean (the Wini seamount).

∙ 11y agoHawaii is growing larger year after year due to the many volcanic eruptions that occur. The lava that floods out of the volcanoes the cools and builds up new land mass. this is a relatively slow process as the lava has to first settle on the ocean floor and build up to the height of sea level.
