There are 32 counties in Ireland 26 are free called the Republic of Ireland and the 6 in the north are collectively called Northern Ireland. These 6 are still in control of Britain, although the Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998 (the peace process) this allows Unionists and Nationalists to share power in Northern Ireland, while the Republic of Ireland is free.
Irish independence came with the creation of the Irish Free State - dominion status - in 1922. Ireland formally became a republic in 1949, although arguably this state had been reached in 1937 with the creation of the office of president.
There are two possible interpretations for this question. The first is what was the process that Ireland underwent to achieve independence. The Republic of Ireland as it is known now first arose during the Easter Rising of 1916. Though the British suppressed this initial movement, it brought Irish Republicanism to the forefront of the social thought. It culminated in Sinn Fien taking a majority of seats and declaring independence in 1918. At this instance the Irish War of Independence then began and lasted until 1921, though fighting continued in Northern Ireland until 1922, and even now there is still instability in Northern Ireland. The Anglo-Irish Treaty signed in 1921 created the Irish Free State. It remained as a Dominion of Great Britain until 1937, when the 1921 Constitution was replaced and Ireland gained full and free independence and its own Sovereign Capacity.
The second is why did Ireland deserve Independence, which is a much more difficult question to answer. Why does any country deserve independence? Although it is perhaps easier to answer it for Ireland. For centuries Ireland had its own system of government, culture, religion, and society distinct from everyone else. It was the ancestors of the Irish, the Celts, that stopped the Romans from conquering all of the British Isles. Ireland, well before William the Conqueror arrived had attacked what would become England repeatedly, to the point where the Anglo-Saxons stayed away from Ireland. This fierce independence only came to an end when William the Conqueror's forces crossed into Ireland. And for a time Ireland had been part of England, though they continually fought to overthrow that. Things again came to a head when Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church and formed the Anglican Church. The Catholic Ireland fought against Henry VIII's mandated Protestantism, which eventually allowed Oliver Cromwell to find the cause he needed to slaughter the Irish just because they were Catholic. This religious persecution continued and ended up being one of the driving forces of the Easter 1916 Rebellion as mentioned above. They deserved independence because they were their own Sovereign Nation with their own Culture that the British chose to subjugate for years, even though they never stopped fighting. And so in early 20th Century they were finally able to reestablish their own culture.

The EU is an organisation which has 27 different independent countries as members. Ireland is one of those. This is different to the United States, where the 50 states are all part of one country. None of the US states are countries, and the USA is not an organisation. In the same way that Ireland is a member of the EU, the USA is a member of a number of organisations which have different countries as members, like the United Nations and NATO. There are many other organisations around the world which have independent countries as members.
