On land set aside by a majority vote in the UN General Assembly, the residents of that

land declared it a sovereign nation in May, 1948, and named it Israel. It was immediately

attacked by the combined military forces of several of its neighbors, but survived the attack.

Israel is a Jewish country. Religiously, most Jews are secular, but still define as Jewish and make up around 80% of the population. Moslems make up around 19% of the population. Christians share the remaining 1% with Bahai'i, Druze, and other religious minorities.

practice their religion there. But the country was established mainly as a haven

for Jews, and more than half of the world's Jews now live there. They comprise

around 70% of the nation's population, and since the government is popularly
