Kaplan College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. However, this is not the preferred accreditation for colleges and universities. This could present some problems should you wish to continue your education at regionally accredited schools, and may present some problems with employers. When choosing a college or university make sure the institution has a regional accreditation. With a regional accreditation, you can be assured the coursework and degree you complete will be recognized by all other colleges and universities as well as employers. Below are listed the six regional accrediting agencies and their geographical areas of responsibility. Make sure the school is accredited by one of them.

Regional Accreditation Agencies

• Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools - Educational institutions in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, as well as schools for American children in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

• New England Association of Schools and Colleges - Educational institutions in the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont).

• North Central Association of Colleges and Schools - Educational institutions in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

• Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities - Postsecondary institutions (colleges and universities) in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

• Western Association of Schools and Colleges - Educational institutions in California, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Micronesia, Palau, and Northern Marianas Islands.

• Southern Association of Colleges and Schools - Educational institutions in Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.

Kaplan University rates a 5.7 out of 10 from over 400 reviews on the Online Degree Reviews website.

They rate 3.6 out of 5 from 70 reviews on the Distance Education website.

They rate 2.7 out of 5 from 55 reviews on the Glass Door website.

Positive Opinions:

Kaplan University grants certificates as well as regionally accredited associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees. They have several campuses, plus specialize in distance learning. They are accredited through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Negative Opinions:

The institution does not have the appropriate regional accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Therefore the coursework and degree you complete will not be recognized by all other colleges and universities as well as employers. Kaplan does not have the proper type of accreditation that one would expect from the least of the community colleges.

While Kaplan may have certain accreditation for certain programs in certain regions, many of your credits will not transfer to state universities because many of those courses are not accredited. The program can be accredited while a particular course is not.

There are also some programs like the nursing program that are accredited with one agency but not another. The nursing program is accredited by the CCNE, but not by the NLNAC. If you're up for a nursing job against somebody with a degree from a well-established school with a respected nursing program that is accredited by both the CCNE and the NLNAC, you aren't likely to be the one they pick.

If you go to your local community college for a couple of years to get some cheap credits, transfer to a state university, and then you will have a respectable degree and have a lot easier time finding a job. For-profit colleges like Kaplan are exactly that. Institutions of profit, not education.

It's not credible at all, employers regularly throw people's resume's in the trash who got their degree from Kaplan. I mean anyone can get in all you need to do is have a GED after that you just walk through the door.

There have been numerous complaints. While it appears to be regionally accredited - a thing I no longer fully trust - many students and former students have reported fraudulent charges, exorbitant charges, unable to resolve issues, unable to contact advisors, and many other problems that indicate something is seriously wrong.

While the convenience of getting a degree online is appealing, the main point of degrees is not to learn - that can be done at a library - but to have a degree at a reasonable cost that will do you some good in life. For this, you should seek a local community college, and if you must go online, avoid Kaplan.
