Northern state.. The same applies with DE and DC since DC was a part of Maryland. You can tell the difference when you cross the Potomac. The way people think/act and the way of life. Even the weather patterns changes from that area northward. I have relatives in Silver Spring and they consider themselves from the Northeast. I lived in NY and when I would travel south to NC once I entered Virginia I know I was down south. MD/DE/DC does have some southern in them but that's what makes this border area so special.
