Mobile phone: Boon or Bane?

Communication among people is most important. Olden days letters were used to send through bird. With the invention of telephone by people used to talk and communicate to long distances. With advent of mobile phone the entire concept of communication is completely changed. The world became one. Earlier mobile phone was luxury and now it is necessity. Every one from house maid, rickshaw puller, taxi drivers, office boys etc, from common man to elite people are using mobile phone for communication. The cost of mobile starts from modest Rs 3000 to billions (platinum and diamond studded).

According to survey nearly 30 crores of people are using mobile phone. It is estimated by 2010 nearly 25 crores of people use mobile phones having internet and camera facility. The largest mobile users in the world is China, next comes to India. The market share of Nokia is 52.8%, followed by 10.2% LG and 8.3 % Samsung.

Whether the mobile phone is boon or bane?

We see many people use cell phone, some to pass on information, the love birds used to talk very often, marketing agents to contact customers, boss to give instruction, mother can monitor where her children are, the children can inform their parents where there are, your house maid may inform you that she may not come to work and give her mobile number to contact in case of emergencies, your drivers will come to the place from car parking place when you contact him, your vegetable vendor will deliver the vegetables when you ask him over mobile to deliver vegetable to your door step, your pizza, medicines, groceries, what not every thing will come to you at a punch of number buttons on your cell phone. You can listen music, radio, internet, take beautiful photographs of your loved ones, send money and find the location with GPS, give SMS, see video, you can play games when you are bored, make word, power point, excel document, store numbers and databases, reminders for your schedule, get alerts, get cricket score, breaking news, stock quotes, it can act as torch when there is a power failure. Mobile became multipurpose toy every one wants to have it and enjoy. It became part and parcel of every one day to day life. Life became so easy.

But life became so difficult to the people. Your privacy is lost; you were monitored by every one and every moment. You were disturbed in meeting with unsolicited calls from marketing people who wants to give personal loans, selling the credit cards and selling their products, the marketing people will have tough time with the bosses who will monitor their sales men continuously. It is also intruded the private life of individual. When you are watching and enjoying cinema with your family in Cinema Theater you were disturbed. An employee get call and disturbed when meeting is in progress. Your concentration is diverted with the ringing of cell phones. You were stress and in tension always. You were disturbed even when you are in temple. Many public places you can see the sign board switch off the mobile phone, in cinema halls, temples, churches, mosques, office board room. You were asked by your boss not to switch off the cell phone. If you are not responding to the call, people think that you are doing it intentionally but you may be busy in driving the vehicle, praying in temple or outing with family function. Misunderstandings will be created. In this way life became so tough to many people.

Even after coming from hectic work from office you will be disturbed. Your holiday to Bali, Singapore or serene beaches of Hawaii islands holiday will be spoilt because you were disturbed by calls from cell phones. You get signal any where in the world from Kashmir to Kanya kumari, from Arctic to Antarctica, from Ladakh to London. You can not be escaped. It became fashion to every one to keep the ear phone listening to music from FM radio and MP3 players from mobile. According the reports continuous hearing of the music will face hearing problems. And many studies shows that the radioactive waves emitted from cell phone will harm the health of people. There are many road accidents due to the use of mobile while driving by two wheelers and many people including taxi drivers will be talking over mobile while driving.

How to control mobile phones usage and avoid intruding into private life?

•People should switch off the mobile phone once he comes from home from work and during holiday, strict instructions should be given to contact him only in emergencies.

•Avoid carrying mobile phone when you are outing, call back missed calls and keep in mobile in silent mode.

•Using of mobile phone in public places like cinema halls, restaurants etc should be banned, this will disturb others, and some people talk so loudly you can know the whole life history of a person.

•Using of Mobile Phone for listening of the music should be used sparingly as continuous listening will lead to hearing problems.

•Parents should also control children in use of the mobile phones; I see many parents will give expensive cell phone to children. Many children spend much of their time with cell phone by listening music and playing games. This will also disturb their concentration and spoil studies.


•There should be strict law to punish the people who use mobile phone while driving. Many educated people should act and not to use the cell phones while driving and help in implementing law strictly. The law enforcers should implement law strictly by imposing fine and jail term to the law breakers.

Technology is good for human betterment but excess technology will spoil the life style of the people. This is the case with Mobile Phones.
