It depends on where you are. Many Virginians consider themselves Southern, and typically do follow southern tradition and culture. I have grown up in a southern Virginia family. However, it is the general sentiment of Virginians that the true cut off point between north and south exists in the state. There is an old saying that says above the town of Culpeper yankee, below southern. This holds true for most of the state. There is one major exception and that is Charlottesville. Although the people that have lived in Charlottesville for multiple generations tend to be southern, most said locals have moved from the area due to the onslaught of what locals call "foreigners", those who move from up north. Virginia has a rich southern heritage. You just won't find it in certain areas. Northern Virginia is not southern, and the rest of the state is. Many famous southern people are from Virginia. Patsy Cline, the Carter Family, Thomas Stearns "Stonewall" Jackson, Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and most important of all, the patron saint of the south, the man himself, Robert E. Lee.
Virginia was a Southern state during the Civil War. It is the northernmost of the states that formed the Conderacy.
