∙ 14y agoVyvanse (lisdexamfetamine, active ingredient dextroamphetamine) is an amphetamine. Ritalin (methylphenidate) is not. Both work by stimulating the central nervous system. Vyvanse's effects also last longer (9.4-13 hours) vs. plain Ritalin's (2-5 hours); However, there are several different extended release versions of Ritalin (including Concerta, Metadate, Ritalin LA, and Ritalin SR to name a few) which last up to around 10 hours.

∙ 13y agoVyvance is basically the same thing as other ADD medications except it is somehow bonded with the amino acid lysine. Basically that means that after it goes into your liver, the amino acid is removed and you are left with the active ingredient of Vyvanse, which is "Dextroamphetamine." It's the same as any other medication for ADD except it only works when taken orally. So yes, it is very much like Ritalin, except it lasts for about 12 hours.

∙ 11y agoI would say that Vyvanse is more chemically similar to Adderall, as the active metabolite of Vyvanse (or Lisdexamfetamine) is dextroamphetamine, and Adderall, though it is a combination of amphetamine salts, contains 75% dextroamfetamine. Vyvanse is supposedly less likely to become addictive and lasts longer than even the XR version of Adderall.
Ritalin, on the other hand, is composed of a different kind of stimulant: Methylphenidate. It actually works differently when you get into the gritty pharmacokinetics than amphetamines.

If your talking about Vyvanse, the stimulant prodrug used for treating ADHD, I think I can answer you question. Taking more than your doctor recommended dose is just like taking larger amounts of any of the other stimulant drugs used to treat ADHD (adderall, ritalin, ect...). Vyvanse is an amphetamine. It is however metabolised differently that other drugs containing amphetamines, and I believe it's been designed to have less overdose danger than Adderall, for example. It can cause euphoria, increased heart rate and blood pressure, agitation, and many other side effects.

they may say it is, but it may not appear that way to you. It did not for me. Im back on Adderall. This is only my opinion. From what I can gather, you need 2.6 times more vyvanse than adderall so if you were honestly taking 60mg of adderall, theoretically you'd need to take a whopping 200mg of vyvanse to equal the power. I more so assume that he's one: trying to make more money by prescribing the newer more expensive pill. Two: he might be trying to curb possible abuse in the area, or trying to make a healthier choice by trying to fight personal dependency by using less powerful amphetamines over a longer time.
