It depends on how deep the snow is, chains will give more grip in the deep snow but if the snow is not too deep then a 4 wheel drive will do the job. I suppose the best choice would be 4 wheel drive with chains. If conditions are that bad then it's probably better to stay home and look at wiki answers!
"Snow tires with chains are much safer than regular winter tires if you live in an area with heavy winter snowfall. Snow tires with chains will help you to travel along roads that have not yet been plowed, where regular tires would probably get buried."
You strap them around your drive tires.
The chains go on the Rear tires. For the rear wheel drive cars.
So they can more easily move in snow and ice.

You put tire chains on the front wheels of a front wheel drive vehicle. The chains help the tires driving the car get a better grip on the road. Some people put chains on all wheels. That makes the brakes work on all wheels.
If you are having a snowy winter and need traction for tires, a good idea is to use tire chains and it would work.
tire chains go on the drive wheels but it is best to chain all 4 tires if in extreme weather be sure to check with local authorities about chain regulations not all places allow tire chains by the way i drive for a living in British Columbia Canada and we chain all winter here Saturn does not recommend snow chains for any of there vehicles. I currently have 2 95 wagons and an 04 VUE My kids drive the wagons and I put 4 deep lug snow tires on them when they are at college in upstate New York. They have yet to get stuck. Hope this answers your question.
Chains increase the surface area which increases the friction so you gain traction.
The powered tires. On a front wheel drive car, the front wheels. On rear wheel drive, the rear wheels.
Front wheel drive
You at least want the drive wheels to be winter for traction. For the best results all 4 should be.
