tecnicaly yes it was renamed 4l60 e
The Transmission on a 1994-1996 caprice is a 4L60E basically an electronically controlled version of the 700R4 which is hydraulically controlled.
700r4 is the stock transmission for all third gen camaros. the 700r4 is also known as the 4L60E
The stock 5L Caprice comes with a 700r4 transmission so no upgrade would be needed. VBdenny **funny, cuz mine doesnt. 4L60 and i think its pretty WEAK! Does anyone who knows what they're talking about know about this problem? i need a strong-BAD-ASS Auto-tranny that wont let me down- for $$CHEAP$$ inexpensive, im not rich! that's why I drive a 92 Caprice Station Wagon!!! "What parts/components/Transmission do i need to UPgrade my tranny?" Thanks Ken D. The 4L60 is the newer name for the 700R4. It's the same transmission. The 700R4/4L60/4L60E are all weak transmissions, especially the 4th gear clutchpack. If you upgrade transmissions, you should purchase a large transmission cooler. This will lengthen the life of the tranny.
700R4
My 1986 GMC High Sierra 1500 stock transmission is a 700R4. My 1986 GMC High Sierra 1500 stock transmission is a 700R4. it could also be a th 400

700R4
There was only one year the 700r4 turbo automatic came out. All GMC's in 1969 came out with this 350 engine and this transmission. The above answer was left unchanged to show why some people shouldn't answer questions. He's almost right about one thing; "there was only one year the 700r4 turbo automatic came out". Alas, there is no such thing as a 700r4 turbo automatic. the designation was "TH700R4" with the "TH" meaning "Turbo Hydromatic". It only "came out one year" true, that year was 1982. However, they continued to make cars and trucks with this transmission until 1993. His statement "all GMC's in 1969 came with this 350 engine and this transmission" IS FALSE. Unless the parts team at GMC has a TARDIS. The 700r4 didn't exist until 1982. To answer your question: A LOT of cars and trucks came "stock" with a 5.7L, or 350 c.i.d. and TH700r4 transmission. across the BPOC )Buick, Pontiac, Olds, Chevy) spectrum. Caprice '82-'92, Corvette '82-'92, Camaro (some) '83-'93, GMC and chevy vans '83-'92, Firebird '83-'93, Parisienne '84-'88, LeSabre 1984, C&K 1500 and 2500 '82-'92.
700R4
Maybach it is!
