First off you are comparing a full size car to a small pony car. They are two different type cars and you are comparing apples to Oranges. The Impala will ride better, has more cargo room, and is generally a good family car. The Mustang on the other hand has better handling, is faster, and is more fun to drive. They are both good cars in their class.

the most popular car was the VW beetle closely followed by the Ford Mustang and then the chevy nova. The best selling car in the U.S. in 1971 was the Chevrolet Impala/Caprice, not the VW, Mustang, or Nova as the answer above suggests.
Chevy because they have the camaro, corvette, and the best trucks ever. Ford on the other hand does have the mustang but that's the only good thing so Chevy wins.
