Is a Chiweenie an allergy free dog?

The Chiweenie, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Dachshund, is also known as a "Mexican Hotdog". Chihuahuas are low shedding and low dander dogs (no dog is allergy FREE). Dachshunds, however, tend to have more dander and lick their coats a lot which leaves their saliva on their coats. It is the dander (dandruff), and proteins in the saliva and urine that usually cause the allergic response, not the hair itself. Therefore, the Chiweenie would probably have the same coat and skin characteristics as each of those breeds. It may be that they would be easier for those with Allergies to live with than dogs that shed a lot, but a purebred Dachshund is not recommended for those with allergies. However, even with purebred dogs, each individual dog and each individual person with allergies can vary, so you can not always test one dog in a breed and assume the same reactions will happen with other dogs in the same breed. Only a trial with a specific dog will tell you how that dog will do. Most reputable breeders will allow you time to be with the animal before you buy it to see how the allergies react . If they will not give you access for this type of trial, go to a different breeder.
