A lichen is not a bacterium. However, certain photosynthetic bacteria can become part of a lichen.

Lichens are a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic organism, usually a green alga but sometimes a cyanobacterium.

Only bacteria that can do photosynthesis can form lichens. They are called cyanobacteria.

Lichens are made up of two organisms that mutually benefit each other (symbiosis).

One organism is a fungus, which provides support and can extract nutrients from sources such as rocks.

The other organism must be able to photosynthesize so that it can produce sugars for use by itself and the fungus. It is usually a green alga but can be a cyanobacterium, a bacterium that can produce food from sunlight (photosynthesis).

Most lichens are composed of a fungus and a green alga.

Some are composed of a fungus and a cyanobacterium.

There are even lichens composed of all three together.

How is a lichen different from a plant or animal?

A lichen is not a single organism; it is a stable symbiotic association between a fungus and algae and/or cyan bacteria. Symbiotic means any two life form that can only exist with the two life forms are together. There are many examples of this in the plant world, where a plant only have one pollinator and the pollinator only feeds on that plant. Like all fungi, lichen fungi require carbon as a food source; this is provided by their symbiotic algae and/or cyan bacteria, that are photosynthetic. The lichen symbiosis is thought to be a mutualism, since both the fungi and the photosynthetic partners, called photobionts, benefit.

What consists of the mutualistic relationship of a fungus or either algae or autotrophic bacteria?

LichensA lichen (LIE kuhn) is a combination of a fungus and an alga that grow together. The alga actually lives inside the protective walls of the fungus. The resulting organism is different from either organism growing alone. The lichen is a result of a mutualistic relationship. But the merging of the two organisms to form a lichen is so complete that scientists give lichens their own scientific names.Shortened answer: Lichen
