Usually no--the lender goes by the lowest credit rather then the higher. So----if you are applying and your credit is better and you can apply alone--DO IT! Then work on the other person's credit to improve it for the next time.

What are the disadvantages of cosigning on a mortgage?

If the primary borrower defaults the cosigner can get "stuck" with a huge debt and ruined credit. A cosigner has the same legal obligation to repay a loan as does the primary borrower. In addition, a cosigner does not have property owner rights, only the debt. The real question is why would anyone agree to pay a mortgage for land they do not own. A co-signer has an equal obligation to pay the mortgage.

How much will cosigning a student loan lower your credit score?

Hi-Cosigning a loan will not lower your credit score unless payments are late, or if the borrower defaults and you cannot make the payments yourself. A cosigner is equally liable for the loan, so if you cannot make the payments, you should not sign. The way that cosigning will affect your credit report is in your debt-to-income ratio. The loan you cosign will show up as part of your debt, so a lender may not want to loan you more money if it looks like your debts are too high.Something that people often overlook though, is that cosigning a loan can actually improve your credit rating if the borrower makes his payments on time. You will get credit for making payments and paying off this debt as if it were your own.

How is a primary borrower's credit affected if he or she defaults on a loan but the cosigner pays the loan?

The defaulted debt will become a negative entry on the primary borrower's credit history and will remain for the required 7 years.

Is a primary borrower's mortgage or credit affected when the co signer on a loan declares bankruptcy?

no

If you claim chapter 7 bankruptcy can they go after your cosigner for money?

Typically, yes. When a person co-signs a loan they are EQUALLY responsible for the debt. When one party files for bankruptcy they are not going to be responsible for payment unless it falls within a category of non dischargeable debts (in which case they would) but you should let them know of the almost certain liability. Beyond the requirement to pay for the debt, the cosigner may also have to pay late fees or collection costs associated with a default on the loan. The creditor can use the same collection methods against the cosigner as against the primary borrower. If the primary borrower doesn't pay and goes into default, it will ruin the cosigners credit. Cosigning on another person's debt may affect your own ability to receive loans. The debt is also considered yours and raises your own outstanding balance. Cosigning a loan for a son or daughter might affect your estate or gift tax exemptions.

How can I get out of a cosigning loan that is still active?

Chances are you will not be able to remove yourself from responsibility for any loan you cosign until the loan is paid in full. Remember, the borrower needed you to cosign because he didn't have credit, or had bad credit and was not considered by the lender to be a suitable risk. By cosigning, you are actually taking full responsibility for repaying the loan. There are a few situations where a lender may agree to remove you as cosigner if records indicate that payments have been made on time for a period of

You are attempting to establish credit in your own name your mother is co-borrower on your student loan Will it show on your credit score?

It will only show on the primary borrowers credit report. If the primary defaults on the loan then the responsibility falls to the co-signer. In brief, if the loan is in good standing the primary borrower will have it on their credit report only. If the loan is late or is defaulted it will be reported on both the primary and co-signers report.
