Yes. It is important to know how the sun and planets interact. Knowledge about how and why the solar system came to be and how it will evolve is important but not on the scale of human life. However, apart from the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, there are important day-to-day consequences. For example, solar flares result in massive coronal ejections - plasma ejected into space from the sun - the largest of which can cause huge magnetic storms on earth. The earth's magnetosphere protects us from most of their effects but polar areas are more vulnerable. The storms can knock out electronic components and are known to have caused massive power outages in Canada and Northern US.
