Both Soda and coffee can cause weight gain. It really depends on if your coffee is black or if its a non homemade coffe with a bunch of sugar in it. Coffee and soda both have caffiene in them which are one of the reasons people get extra fat around their lower stomach and around their hips. The reason being is every time we drink caffiene we get a burst of energy. That energy to our bodies is called "fight or flight" mode. When we go into fight or flight mode the cortisol located in our lower stomach is released to help give us the energy for whatever is causing our fight or flight, but when its only because of the caffiene that our bodies are in fight or flight we dont use up our cortisol causing the left over cortisol to form fat around our hips and lower tummy. Both can also raise blood pressure and cause your heart to beat too fast.

The caffeine content in coffee may help give you that extra burst of energy before exercising, but other than that, there are no studies proving that coffee will help you to lose weight. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume, which is best achieved through exercise.
