Hamsters are originally from South America After doing a report with my 2nd grade daughter we learned that it depends on the breed, but the come mostly from Asia. In particular Russia, China, Turkey and a lot of mention of Syria. The first domesticated hamsters were Syrian hamsters.

Yes they are, but you should be mindful that they are very small and wriggley so can easily get dropped or lost. A better choice might be a Syrian hamster as they are slightly bigger and easier to handle.

Dwarf hamsters like having each others company. However, if the 1 year old hamster is not use to other hamsters, it might not go over to well.
