The Constitution protects freedom of religion by letting people that have certain religion like catholics, go places and be somewhere. It doesn't force you to do something like pray at school anywhere else.

In the original constitution proper, the rights to freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion are not explicitly granted. However, the powers of the federal government are explicitly granted and do not include the power to encroach on either of these rights of the people.

Still, in an effort to make it more explicit that these rights continued to obtain in each citizen, the Bill of Rights was adopted soon after the the Constitution was ratified. The First Amendment provides both the freedom of speech and the right to freely exercise one's religion.

The First Amendment reads:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
