They are both different game styles, Battlefield 3 is a first-person shooter and Gears of War 3 is a third-person shooter. If you like the Call of Duty series, then Battlefield will be the best for you. If you like mass effect etc, Gears is best for you.
Overall, my personal opinion on the best game is Battlefield 3.
