The blocks are nearly the same. If you use the 258 intake and distributor in the 4.0; the only part that will need modifying is the exhaust from the manifold. I did one in a weekend using a 727 from a 91 wagoneer and a 02 4.0 engine. I used the 258 intake, carb, and distributor. I used the old v belt system to make it easy. It's easier to mod up an engine that's already running than making it work later.

the fuel pump relay for a 1987 jeep xj is the second relay in from the fron on the passenger side of the engine compartment.

There is no 3.1 engine in any Jeep
You just have to unbolt it. However, it may be possible that you'll have to remove the engine from the engine compartment in order to do this.

yes it should because the 4.2 wasnt done away with until 90 i believe when they went to 4.0. My 89 wrangler had a 4.2
