No it is not.
Why would you want to pump CLEAN FLUID through a dirty FILTER.
i dont think its ever a good idea to let 10 year old fluid ride if you wiliing to change it
Make sure you have the right transmission fluid. Changing the fluid will require removing the bottom of the pan and draining the fluid. You will need to replace the pan gasket and it is a good idea to replace the filter. There are kits available with the required parts.
change the return hose and change the fluid and filter
It is a very good idea. I would recommend you NOT flush this transmission, but just change the fluid and filter. Flushing it may just stir up trouble in one that is this old and has been neglected.ANS 2 - Actually, if someone has the mechanical sense to do it, flushing it totally is the best way by far.Changing the fluid and filter at the pan is good, but leaves almost half the total fluid in the convertor. - However this is not an easy process to describe here and also differs from vehicle to vehicle. So let's leave it that the filter and fluid change should be done at least every 50,000.
When the fluid no longer look red. Transmission fluid normally doesn't have to be changed that often. For a manual transmission, maybe after 100K. The manual transmission fluid is thicker and hardly ever breaks down. Unless the gears are clashing, etc. But for an automatic transmission: that would depend on how you drive you vehicle. A good idea for a transmission fluid change would be every 3rd to 4th motor oil change. The transmission fluid is completely different from motor oil, but will eventually wear out. I say a fluid and filter change. It is usually a bad idea to get a transmission flush if the transmission is doing good, so far.
to show (1) whether the transmission needs fluid and (2) to show whether the fluid needs changing. Brown to dark brown reveals burnt fluid and needs changing badly. If high milage it's a good idea to change the transmission filter and the fluid.
Fuel filter and clean oil may be a good idea, but your 8 to 10 mpg will not change.
It is very important to change the filter and transmission fluid. I believe Ford recommends 30,000 miles and mine started acting up after 45,000 miles. In fact it's a good idea to change the filter and fluid on all automatic transmission vehicles at the 50,000 mile range. Will last longer
Likely not, If right type of trans fluid was used. Some vehicles have filters in the trans. It;s a good idea to change the filter and replace the drained fluid every 40000 miles. Some vehicle done 't require this - a trans flush is all that can be done.
Possibley nothing but, anytime you remove a part from the fuel system you may get dirt or material in the line . It is always good a good idea to change out both.
You don't state how many miles you have on it, but if you intend to keep it for the foreseeable future, it is a good idea. First, though, pull the transmission dipstick and let some of the fluid run off on a white paper towel. If the fluid is still red or 'pinkish' in color it is probably still good for a while longer. However, it is brownish or dark in color conisider having it done ASAP. It is a good idea to have the filter changed at the same time and/or make sure they drop the transmission sump pan in order to COMPLETELY drain all the fluid.
Transmission fluid can be changed by unbolting the transmission pan on the underside of the vehicle. Unbolt three sides of the pan completely, and just loosen the fourth side, this will allow the pan to hang on an angle and the fluid will drain slowly. Once done draining it is a good idea to replace the filter also, located on the other side of the pan bolted to the transmission.
