Not so much harmful to the truck itself, but definitely harmful to the steering's hydraulic components. The fluid doesn't just provide pressure to make things move, but just as importantly, it provides lubrication to those moving parts. In the short term, (as in; you drove home from work before you could fix it) it's probably not going to damage too much but you may have to bleed the system once the problem is repaired. Over the long term, the steering shaft joints may be overstressed, and the Power Steering pump and hydraulic pistons may become damaged due to excessive friction.
