If the food colouring is naturally derived (such as beetroot extract), it will do no harm (unless you have a beetroot allergy etc...). However some unnaturally derived food colourings are still petrochemicals, such as tatrazine yellow. These chemicals are known to have health side-effects (can make Asthma worse, Allergies, hyperactivity and possibly cancer). These unnaturally derived food colourings are best avoided where possible.
