Slander, defamation of character and other similar types of personal attacks are not considered criminal offenses. Physical threats to a person and/or property can be considered criminal offenses even in email correspondence, and can be used as evidence in court. However, anyone who engages in such attacks with the knowledge that the charges are false can be sued in civil court by the person(s) and/or business that have incurred financial, emotional, and similar damages. The circumstances would dictate the consequences, that being the case, a specific answer as to possible penalties is not possible.
If you send a group email, someone could copy the address list and send one of their own; you would have no control over it. Sending slanderous emails is a bad idea. Not only is it not nice, but the printed word is there forever. My rule is that I never send an email I would be embarrassed to have my mother, boss, or pastor read.
