Not Always, On A few nissans, I have found that the problem was actually the harness and not the sensor. This may save you a bit of money!
If this is a 4-cyl, it is a very in-depth process to replace the seal...removing motor mounts and the majority of engine components to be able to pull the camshaft. If it is necessary, follow instructions for replacing the head gasket on your model. You can replace the seal at the point of removing the Timing Belt.
NEED to??? No. But the question becomes, why are you replacing the camshaft? You should always replace the lifters when replacing the camshaft. A worn camshaft usually indicates that there will be other wear as well, but if you just want to squeeze a few more miles out of the engine, you might be able to get by with just replacing the cam and lifters.

Assuming you are asking about a 4.0L engine... Remove the distributor cap. Remove the rotor. Unplug the camshaft positioning sensor from the harness. Lift carefully where the cable feeds through the distributor to the CMP and remove. Put replacement CMP in the same place and connect it to the harness. Replace the rotor and distributor cap. Camshaft sensor is located at rear end of rear camshaft(near driver). It is screwed on the little bowl and has a connector attached to it. The little bowl contains the camshaft sensor gear , do not unscrew if not necessary , just replace sensor. Jules
Front of the engine, accessed from underneath, just to the passenger side of center - has wiring harness on it. Very easy to replace

In order to replace the camshaft position sensor, you would need to disconnect the electrical plug holding it in. Using a socket, hold down the bolt and remove the camshaft position sensor.

It's located on the distributor. You don't have to remove the distributor to replace the sensor. Remove the air cleaner, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the distributor cap, disconnect the camshaft position sensor wiring harness, remove the distributor rotor, lift the camshaft position sensor assembly from the distributor housing Camshaft Position Sensor. Installation, Install the camshaft position sensor into the distributor. Align the sensor into the notch on the distributor housing, connect the wiring harness, reinstall the rotor, reinstall the distributor cap. Tighten the mounting screws, reinstall the air cleaner.
