Is it normal when a guy tells you that he wants to be friends but then makes frequent phone calls and text messages each day after and multiple times a day while you constantly responds?

This is not normal. The girlfriend should respect you and tone down that friendship, the guy is obviously biding his time until the day of your break-up where he will make his move. If all of the contact makes you uncomfortable, tell your girlfriend that you feel like he is paying her too much attention.
