It is possible for a non-insulin-dependent diabetic type 2 to be healthy if the effort is made. Moreover, there is growing evidence that some non-insulin-dependent diabetic type twos can (through sustained effort) "reverse" their diabetic diagnoses via diet and exercise.

Does type 2 diabetes cause insulin deficiency or insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance is caused by obesity and a family history of insulin resistance. You can develop insulin resistance without these, but it's rare. Insulin resistance leads to type 2 diabetes. A type 1 diabetic can develop insulin resistance the same way anyone else does, but becoming obese and by having insulin resistance in the family. In this case, the insulin resistance and the type 1 diabetes are totally unrelated.

In addition to taking insulin how can one treat Diabetes?

Diet is critical to anyone with diabetes. Taking insulin allows the person to control their blood sugar but if they are overloading their body with foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates they are going to have a very difficult time maintaining a proper blood sugar level even with the insulin.

What are some good herbs for diabetes?

Herbs do not manage diabetes, which is a disease in which the body does not produce sufficient insulin to properly manage blood glucose levels. While some diabetics require daily insulin, others can manage the disease with diet. A solid eating plan includes foods from all five foods groups in proper portions spaced out over the day. An eating plan for a diabetic is suitable as a healthy, sound eating plan for just about anyone. These sites have lots of information: www.diabetes.org AND www.nutrition.gov

Can a diabetic die from injecting too much insulin?

Yes, it is possible for anyone to die if they inject too much insulin. What will occur is something called insulin shock. Their blood glucose will drop and they can go into a coma. In extreme cases this can be followed by death.

What are the major differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes requires insulin to be injected. Type 1 is also not from eating a lot of unhealthy foods. Type 1 is a genetic disorder. Anyone can have it if it's in their genes or their relatives genes. Not every one who has relatives that have it get it, too. There is no cure for Type 1 at this point. The cure is expected to come in 5-20 years. Type 2 diabetes does not require insulin shots. Type 2 diabetes is a result of eating unhealthy foods and CAN be reversed. There IS a cure/treatment. Type 2 diabetes is NOT incoded in your genes, it's just the effect of your actions. NEITHER of these disorders are contagious.

What happens if a diabetic doesn't eat?

Well not directly.Diabetes occurs due to lack or complete absence of insulin(a hormone that helps blood sugar get into cells) Type 1 diabetes means the body's failure to produce insulin, it caused by genetic; type 2 diabetes is a condition in which cells fails to use insulin and it caused by genetic and lifestyle factors. However being overweight does increase you risk for developing, a diet high in calories, whether from sugar or from fat, can contribute to weight gain. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and regular exercise are recommended to manage your body weight.

What is pre diabetes and what are the symptoms?

Pre-diabetes is a precursor to diabetes so anyone diagnosed with it needs to be very careful. High blood sugar levels are what lead to diabetes so anyone will want to look after this.

How sick is a person if they wear an insulin pump?

If someone wears an insulin pump then they are a type one diabetic and that that is how they choose to take their insulin (instead of shots, they'd rather just "bolus" by telling the pump to deliver them insulin via infusion set). It does not mean that they are any more or less sick than anyone else with type 1 diabetes. Most people with type 1 diabetes live a normal life, despite the constant blood sugar testing and giving themselves insulin. It is a manageable disease that is made somewhat easier to keep in check by the wonderful invention of the insulin pump. Again, just because someone wears one doesn't mean that they are dying or that they are any sicker than someone else with the disease. It's just their choice of insulin delivery. :)

How old do you have to be to buy insulin?

A person can contract diabetes at any point in their life. Some are born with the disease, while others do not acquire it until they are at an elderly age. My younger cousin caught diabetes when she was 5 years old and my grandmother became diabetic unexpectedly at the age of 64. Anyone at any age can become a diabetic.
