No it is not. you are getting into the area of abuse. There are other ways such as time out, finding out why the child smacked others and teach the child there are other ways other than using force, etc. I know the knee-jerk reaction is to whack the offending kid with the attitude of "There, see what it's like to get hit. You won't do that again." but restrain yourself, there are alternatives. you just need to explore them and put them into practice.
