Safe.. kind of. But you run the risk of overheating the engine & damaging head gaskets, cracking heads/blocks, as well as damaging springs due to the heat. You can also cause the radiator to fail. I Would Have This Fixed As Soon As I Could. The Shaft Can Break On The Pump, Or Lock Up. Causing Damage To Your Belt And Leaving You Broken Down.

I have water leaking from around the water pump on your 95 astro does it have to be replaced or are there gaskets you need to check?

Check the water pump drive shaft. If water is leaking from the hole beneath the drive, it's definitely a bad water pump seal and you can't repair them.

How do you change the water pump in a 2001 LW200 Saturn?

Unfortunately, if your LS (V6) water pump has failed and started leaking, you've also damaged the timing belt. The tool necessary to change the timing belt costs about $500. You'll be ahead if you just take the vehicle to your Saturn dealership and have them replace the belt and waterpump.Note! The owners manual warns that you should replace the timing belt at 100,000 miles, and it's a good idea to do the water pump at the same time.If the water pump is leaking, DON'T DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANY MORE!!! If the timing belt slips a couple teeth, you'll be discussing the cost of an entire engine.
