Is it true that changes to the US Constitution are not necessary or possible?

Nothing could be farther from the truth. It is not easyto make changes to the US Constitution, but from time to time changes are necessary and possible. In fact, not all of the methods of amendment have been tried. On their own, the states have the power to amend the constitution without approval from any branch of government. Once the states ratify an amendment, it becomes law and no branch of government can exercise any appeal or veto. The only involvement of the government is that the senate decides whether the states will go through their existing legislatures to make the amendments, or form special state conventions instead. Many people are of the opinion that the states have attempted many times to initiate this process and have been thwarted by an unresponsive senate. If this is true, it is a serious problem.

Most US citizens seem to think that 'government' is something above them in terms of prestige and authority. Anything that happens related to government somehow 'comes down' from the all powerful federal government and that's that. Few US citizens realize that the authority of the government is given to the government by the People, and that the People within their several states in fact have authority over any US government. We are too lazy, entitled and fat to realize this, or to care. But at some point, the excessive power of government along with the monumental power of Big Business will pressure us into waking from our trance.
