No, that's not true. In fact, many companies are very pleased to see an applicant who has volunteered or has been an intern somewhere. This shows the person understands the work environment and has received valuable experience. Of course, some companies prefer to hire only people with experience, so it depends on where you are applying. But if you have a degree (and good grades) and you also have experience as a volunteer or as an intern, it will be seen positively by potential employers.
