This question invites more opinion than fact, however the answer may show itself at the end of this discussion. Millions, if not billions of animals (and this is not excluding insects and bugs, as these are animals) are killed and/or misplaced every year with the application of pesticides, tillage of fields, harvesting of crops, removal of wildlife habitat to expand fields for more crop production, and indirectly with runoff of pesticides and fertilizers into waterways, wetlands and riparian areas. Thus the unnatural practice of raising monocultures of crops of vegetables, grains, and fruits, and thus producers' attempts to control nature as much as possible to reduce risk of crop destruction does have a significant impact on animal life. However, this does not answer the question about those animals being raised for meat, so what about meat production? The vast majority of animals being raised for meat are still fed grain, and only 5 to 10% (plus or minus) of animals are raised naturally--no grain fed, just grass-fed, natural-raised animals--which means that if this question counted out the grain fed to the vast majority of animals being raised commercially for slaughter, it wouldn't really justify the amount of grain raised that is still going into the commercial and conventional means of producing meat.

With the vast majority of animals being raised in a confined feeding operation versus a "free-range" one, grain has proven to be quicker and more efficient to feed animals with due to its much higher concentrations of energy and protein that help animals put on weight quicker than if they would on grass or in a natural-based environment. Such grain still has to come from the unnatural practice of raising monocultures of crops, which deem necessary the application of pesticides and fertilizers which, in itself, are responsible for millions of billions of deaths of a vast array of animal life every year. The same production of producing grain to feed animals that will eventually meet their demise at the end of a cap-bolt gun or in a electrocution chamber to be turned into meat still makes it evident that raising plants which go into animals raised for meat would, indeed contribute to more animals being killed with the raising of meat than with the raising of plants.

However, many should realize that this subject is a real grey area among those with different beliefs, views and opinions to the subject of animal agriculture and is open to further discussion.
