Well, there isn't really any fact that says the universe is younger than we once thought, but scientists do speculate that the universe might be younger than we thought, because there are theoretical particles (like the graviton, a particle that creates gravity) that say the universe is younger than we think, but since the particles are just a theory, we don't actually know. It just depends on what information you choose to believe in. Currently, common science teachings say the universe is 13.69 billion years old, which is quite old.

Scientific progress has a way of making everything we knew before wrong, as we learn new facts. Three hundred years ago, the accepted "scientific" age of the Earth was a few tens of thousands of years old; every new fact we learn seems to push back our horizon.

Yes, it's _possible_ - but I don't think it likely. For one thing, the current estimate of 14 (or so) billion years as the age of the universe isn't based on the observed diameter of the universe, since every advance in telescopes reveals things even further away. The 14 gigayear age is based in part on the 4 degree Kelvin "black body radiation" which is believed to be the "echo" of the Big Bang. If the universe were substantially older, the black body radiation would be at a lower level.

The "Scientific Method" requires that scientists - and all of us - be willing to accept new evidence and to put aside old theories that no longer agree with the evidence. One of the WORST crimes that a scientist can commit is to falsify research data to make it support his pet theories; if it were up to me, I would revoke the diploma of anyone guilty of research fraud.

However, as a scientist I keep an open mind; if new evidence suggests that the universe is substantially older (or younger!) than our current "best guess", I'm willing to accept it.

99 percent of the known matter in the universe?

99 percent of the known matter in the universe is said to be in the plasma state, This is a state where matter consists of ionized gas which makes it visible.

Are there atoms in the universe?

The whole universe is made up of atoms but the exact composition of the black matter (blackHole) is not known

What is matter in the universe?

Dark matter is matter of an unknown type. It is known to exist, due to its gravitational influence, but it is not known what it is made of. There is at least 5 times as much dark matter than "normal" matter.

How come the universe is made of matter and not antimatter?

That is not currently known. There is a slight assymetry between matter and antimatter, but so far, it seems that this assymetry is not enough to explain why there is only matter, and hardly any antimatter, in the Universe. Without such an assymetry, there wouldn't be either matter or antimatter in the Universe - just radiation. For more information about what is known, and what isn't, check the Wikipedia article on "Baryon asymmetry".

Why do astronomers theorize that there is dark energy in the universe?

There are several pieces of evidence for dark matter. For example: * Our galaxy, and many other galaxies, rotate way too fast for the amount of known matter. * Evidence from gravitational lensing.

. Matter is defined as anything that has and volume.?

No; all around us, all the Universe is matter in different known or still unknown state.

Is more than 99 percent of the known matter in the universe is in the plasma state?

Yes it is very true

What is the universes most common matter?

According to current estimates, the mass in the Universe is made up of: * 68% dark energy. Not much is known yet about this type of substance. * 27% dark matter. Not much is known about this type of substance, either. * 5% regular matter - matter of known composition. Most of the regular matter is in the form of atoms; and most of it is in a state of matter known as a plasma.

Is it accurate to describe the physical universe as composed of only matter and energy?

Yes. Everything in the universe is made of either matter (like water, animals, plants) and energy (like light) . The two are actually closely related. From a scientific standpoint, the physical universe consists of significantly more items than matter and energy. Several esoteric things such as anti-matter and dark matter are known to exist, and, in fact, may compose a significant portion of the physical universe.

Is it true more than 99 percent of known matter in the universe is in the plasma state?

Yes it is very true

Is hydrogen the newest element?

Hardly. Hydrogen is one of the oldest elements known. It also comprises more than 98% of the matter in the entire known universe.

What state of matter is the most common in the universe and is associated with high temp?

Plasma, commonly known as the fourth state of matter, is not abundant on Earth but is prevalent in deep space.
