No!- Mark performed solo for a long time after disbanding GFR after the album, Good Singin', Good Playin' , in1976. GFR was playing in the early eighties, for a short time. Also, orig. GFR played together,( Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, and Don Brewer) in the mid 90's. Mel and Don wanted Mark to keep playing, but Mark reminded them that he would play 3 years and go back to a solo mode, and he did- Legal wrangling occurred, with Mark unknowingly signing over his rights to the Grand Funk Railroad name and Capital Records support. Don and Mel formed the new Grand Funk Railroad around 1999 or 2000, with a new lead singer, lead guitarist, and keyboard player. Thus, it took 3 people to replace Mr. Mark Farner. Mark still plays solo concerts with his NRG Band. He cannot advertise as GFR, only FORMERLY OF GFR, in capital letters, in front of his name or band .

What happened to mark farner?

Alas, the answer is ~no.I assume "the band" we are referring to be "Grand Funk Railroad" in which cause the answer is an even bigger: NO! The band touring as Grand Funk Railroad no longer has a lead singer that wrote 90% of the music or "moves around the floor in a Locomotion" or does the signature keyboard work as an intro to "Footstompin Music" in fact, there really isn't allot of movement on the stage that we came to enjoy from the showmanship that Mark Farner became famous for along with stellar lead vocals and "wild shirtless antics" In my opinion, the present incarnation of Funk is much like a tribute band with 2 of the 3 original members. Too bad those 2 voted Mark out of the band, we all lose this way.Best bet is to see Mark Farner with his Energy=N'rG band...he's still got that voice and the moves! Sing along to "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" with Mark, he's the closest thing to the real deal there is!

Brewer and Schacher wanted to keep GFR going, and hired Carl, Kulick(Kiss), Cashion and later Frost. Farner fronts the Nr G Band and both groups continue to play GFR songs, but Farner cannot call himself Grand Funk Railroad, because Don and Mel own the rights to the name, although Mark still sits on the Board.

When was pre Grand Funk Railroads Monumental Funk recorded?

Grand Funk started in 1968-69, and Mark and Don played with The Pack, previously known as Terry Knight and The Pack, before that. In between those two. Mark and Don were furious that the record was released without their consent or awareness of it. Someone made money off of Grand Funk's success. Mark says it was a guy from Michigan. He is not mad at the man now. Mel played bass with ? and the Mysterians before joining Grand Funk Railroad.

Did Mark Farner ever drum for Grand Funk Railroad?

Yes, but with Don Brewer on stage, drumming along with him in Grand Funk. Mark was a guitarist from teenage years, and also played harmonica, piano/organ , drums, and bass. He joined Terry Knight and the Pack as a bass player to get in the band, although he was a guitarist. He later became the vocalist and lead guitarist when Terry and Kurt quit at different times. Photo of Mark playing drums with Grand Funk next to Don Brewer, standing with snare drum, are after page 96 and before page 97, in Bill Cooks photo in the book, "An American Band- the story of Grand Funk Railroad" by Billy James. The book claims that it is a 1970 concert, but since seeing GFR several times in 1970 personally, Mark was still playing his famous green Messenger guitar and even at least April 15, 1971 when seen at the San Diego Sports Arena. Mark is playing a Gibson SG in these photos, so they are from 1971 or 1972. Also, Mark wasn't playing drums with Donnie in 1970.
