In Australia we have a health system where you don't have to pay to see a General practitioner, You have to pay the difference between what the government pays and what specialists charge, unless you are on a pension or unemployment benefits. surgery in public hospital scheme is free, medicines are subsidised by the government keeping the price down for those that are in work, and those that are not or those that have spend over a certain amount get it free.

What is Cradle-to-the-Grave Health Care?

A generic term referring to Socialized Medicine where everyone receives 'free' medical care from the time they are born to the time they die. However: NOTHING is free - SOMEBODY has to pay for it.CommentOf course socialised medicine is not free; no-one claims that it is. Why would anyone suggest that it is? It's free at the point of use, and it's paid for through income tax. All citizens are eligible for medical care, regardless of income, regardless of age, regardless of employment status. No-one has to worry about whether they can afford health insurance and no-one is refused treatment due to pre-existing conditions. Most countries with socialised medicine also have private healthcare as an option.

Why are Americans against an NHS-style system?

Because they have been brainwashed by right wing Conservative (Republican) Congressmen and Senators into believing that socialised medicine is Communism, which is totally ridiculous, it is merely the use of the best resources for the good of all whether or not they can afford it. Also, the American Medical profession makes so much money from charging hugely inflated prices for their services, along with the drug manufacturing companies who do likewise with the drugs they produce, that they lobby Congressmen /Senators to stop any Democrat Administration from making reforms to healthcare for the assistance of poorer Americans.
