Hardstyle and Hardcore are both Music Genres that are known as part of the "harder styles of dance music". While the two genres have many similarities, and there are a handful of artists who produce both hardstyle and hardcore (such as Evil Activities/Max Enforcer), the two genres are not identical.

One of the major differences among hardstyle and hardcore is the kick type. Hardstyle and hardcore both contain a hard kick, but there is border between hardstyle and hardcore kicks. Hardstyle kicks are, in some situations, filtered a little bit to be much more suttle than hardcore kicks. In other situations, they are not filtered as much, but are played with more of a raw sounding noise. Hardcore kicks are usually very heavily distorted, more than the kicks of hardstyle are. Also, especially with the earlier hardstyle sound, hardstyle tracks contain a segment called a "reverse bass", which hardcore lacks. This so-called "reverse bass" also appears in newer types of hardstyle music, but as some people mention isn't as powerful as the earlier "reverse bass".

In a few cases, there is some "gray area" in determining whether the kick is a hardstyle or a hardcore kick. Usually if this is the scenario, one would also listen to other features of the song such as what instruments/samples are being used.

This brings us to the next major difference. The other major difference with hardstyle and hardcore is the beats per minute (BPM) of the two genres. Hardstyle music typically ranges from 140-155 BPM while hardcore music can easily reach 150-220 BPM. In some extreme variations, such as speedcore, the BPM can reach up to 500 BPM or higher! To some, this is considered too fast to be called music, but others feel that it too, is a type of music genre in itself.

Hope this helps!

Greetz,

Your everyday hardstyle/hardcore listener.

Its a Matter of Musical TraditionsHeavy Metal is based in the hard rock tradition, stemming back to early seventies acts like Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and Deep Purple. It became more and more popular be the late seventies.

Hardcore is based in punk. Early hardcore acts like The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, and Minor Threat, amped up the speed inherent in most punk music and tended to fuse it with scathing rejections of popular culture.

The most important difference is that Heavy Metal came from the rock mind-set-- which tended to be more extravagant and grand, and hardcore came from the DIY [do-it-yourself] ethos and stripped down aesthetic of the punk movement.

While both genres feature predominately quick tempos, heavy Guitars, and often [depending on the sub-genre] shouted/screamed vocals, its important to remember that Heavy Metal generally focuses on instrumental virtuosity, intricate multi-part song arrangements, and generally more macabre subject matter. Hardcore eshews flashy guitar work for simpler, more direct arrangements, and tend to showcase more political lyrics.

The two can blend together, as many of the early speed-metal bands were influenced by hardcore punk as well as old hard rock. Often the numerous and ever-growing number of sub-genres in both styles causes some confusion and blurring of the line between the two.

To really hear the difference, check out some music by arguably some of the defining bands of both genres. I suggest:

Metal: Judas Priest, Megadeth, Iron Maiden

Hardcore: Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys

I also suggest further reading at www.allmusic.com-- click on 'search by genre' and read up on the history of both for a more detailed answer.

they are both very similar

There are some smiliarities between rock and the lightest metal types. But trve metal is nothing like rock at all. Vocal styles, drum styles, guitar styles, bass styles all change. Also Rock Music is usually way better funded because there is a lower level of musicianship and a higher level of demand in it. Mainly because the vast majority of people are idiotic and prefer simplistic musical styles.

Listen to Breaking Benjamin and then listen to bands like Mayhem, Burzum, Opeth and such to get an idea of what I mean.

Why does heavy metal music have such hard beats?

Heavy Metal was originally coming from Rock. Because Rock isn't that hard like Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal was invented, it shows the difference between both music genres. Heavy Metal must have hard beats as same as country music needs accustic guitars and heartbroken lyrics. Same as techno needs infinite amounts of the same beats with few breaks, but the rythm is the same all the time in a loop.
