The Atkins diet does work, at least it did for me. But the key is that you have to go through all the phases of the program and stick with it. The first stage, induction, is the most strict. THIS IS NOT the Atkins diet, it is merely to start you off with quick weight loss (mostly water) and try to lessen your dependency on "white foods".

Gradually you are allowed more food choices and by the last phase of lifetime maintenance, you are allowed brown rice and things like that as long as you stay in your ideal carb range.

The New Atkins diet as evolved a lot and now includes more allowance of fresh vegetables per day and advises for healthier fats to be consumed in smaller amounts.

But, any diet coupled with exercise will work for most people. You just have to stick with it.

For most overweight people the Atkins Diet will work, as they are hyperinsulinaemic, and the diet is designed to treat this.
The Atkins Diet is not intended as a short term quick fix, like any diet even if successful, if you go back to eating like you were before, then any lost weight will return as well. Atkins designed his diet to be palatable and manageable for life, which is one reason why it gets less restrictive as it goes along.

Yes the Atkins diet works. I've never known anyone that it didn't work for who had tried it. It worked for me and I lost about 50 pounds in 3 months time. If I needed to lose weight, I would definitely do it again. The only trouble tha I had on the Atkins diet was the sugar cravings. I got the worst sugar cravings. But I found a fix. I would have a Atkins shake or an Atkins bar and that would do the job. Also, there are plenty of snacks that are low carb like Just the cheese popped cheese snacks. They are made from cheese so they are low in carbs. You have to try them out, they're pretty tasty.

One answer I believe that the Atkins diet works by eating high protein foods such as eggs meat and fish and avoiding food high in carbohydrates. The idea behind the Atkins diet is good but it could be improved by only eating lower in fat protein like chicken and fish. You can also eat salads low carb fruit, vegetables, and anything with very few carbs. So for it to work you must cut out bread, crisps, potato chips, and all fast food is a no go. In short it works because protein is one of the hardest foods to digest so you feel fuller for longer, it uses almost all the calories to digest it, and if you exercise while on this diet you would lose weight real fast guaranteed.

No. The U.S. Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, said of the Atkins Diet that it's "unhealthy and can be dangerous." It has been officially condemned by that office and many other medical authorities.

A good diet is:
-- one which you can maintain for years and still stay healthy
-- one which does not cut out a major nutrient
-- one which does not cause you to become very bored with the food you have to eat

Atkins puts too much emphasis on cutting out carbohydrates and encourages eating too much protein. An average adult man only needs 50 grams of protein a day. Anything over that has to be converted to carbohydrate or fat. Your body can't get rid of it directly. Converting protein causes a build-up of ammonia, which your kidneys have to process. This is hard on your kidneys. Your diet should get no more than 10% of its calories from protein.

Atkins claims that "instead of carbs" you eat high-fiber vegetables. In reality, many vegetables are the best carb sources, so they're sort of right. You should be getting most of your carbs from vegetables. But you should also be allowed to eat whole grains to get the rest of your carbs. Your diet should be at least half carbohydrates. When you eat vegetables and whole grains to get carbohydrates, you get a good amount of fiber, which Atkins also says is a good thing. You also get necessary vitamins, phytochemicals, and antioxidents to stay healthy.

Atkins encourages eating lots of fats. Instead of fats, which are not very filling, vegetables that contain carbs are much more filling, and are much healthier for you. Saturated fats and trans fats are very bad for your body. You only need 2-4 tablespoons of oils a day to get your Omega 6 fats and 1/2 teaspoon of fish oil or 1 ounce of walnuts to get your Omega 3 fats. Fats have more than twice the calories per gram than carbs or protein, so you can see that if you aren't eating a lot of fats, you can eat twice as much food.

If you take on a diet like Atkins, where you cut out a major food group, you are also setting yourself up for failure in that you will start craving that major nutrient that you need so badly, and you will be forced to cave in. It's much more fun and easy to succeed at a diet in which you get balanced nutrition from many different sources and which does not punish you with deprivation or endanger your health.

The main things to know about the Atkin diet. You should only go on it under the supervision of a Doctor Who has experience with the diet. You'll need to be monitored to make sure bad side effects are minimized and taken care of. Side effects could include problems with your blood sugar level, join problems, and a few other things. I can't stress it enough, your success on the diet greatly improves with the monitoring of a qualified physician. Most people who simply "try" the diet on their own will quit it when bad side effects get to bad.
