The Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders of the world, begins just off the coast of Bundaberg, 368 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane, and extends over 2000 km north to a point just south of Papua New Guinea.
It is a three-day car journey to Cairns, the nearest large city to the most activities that are carried out in the northern regions of the Great Barrier Reef (snorkelling and tours), or a flight of a couple of hours. It is about a five hour car journey to the southern end.
