No, it happened to follow the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and divided slave country from free soil.

And it wasn't the origin of 'Dixie', which was named after the widely-distributed ten-franc coin ('DIX') from when Louisiana was French.

NEW ANSWER:

The Mason and Dixon Line is usually thought of as the line that divides the North and South. Actually it is the east-west boundary line that separates Pennsylvania from Maryland and part of West Virginia, and the north-south boundary between Maryland and Delaware. Before the Civil War, the southern boundary of Pennsylvania was considered the dividing line between the slave and non-slave states.

In the 1700's a boundary quarrel arose between Pennsylvania and Maryland. The two agreed to settle the dispute by having the land surveyed. In 1763, they called in two English astronomers, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon. They completed the survey in 1767. The line was named after them.

The surveyors set up milestones to mark the boundary. Through the years souvenir hunters removed many of the stones and used them as doorsteps and curbstones. Authorities finally recovered many of them, however, and nearly replaced all of the stolen markers.

What is the difference between a physical boundary and a political boundary?

the difference between a political and a physical boundary is that a physical map shows geographical features like mountains and rivers while a political map shows boundaries. One is made by people(politicians), the other by nature. So , occasionally, a political boundary will be a straiight line but there are no straight lines in nature. A river is a common and convenient, physical boundary with two obvious sides. Sometimes, a river may run between two countries and thus becomes an example of a physical boundary serving as a political boundary.A mountain range may serve a similar purpose.
