Muslims are only allowed to fight in self-defense and to restore lost right.

Muslims war ethics: not to fight the peaceful, women, children, the elderly, not to cut down or burn trees, not to destroy anything (ex:houses), not to contaminate wells, not to kill animals except for food. If someone from the enemy side seeks asylum he should be granted it. If the enemy who already started the war calls the war off and ask for peace then Muslims have to turn to peace.

The early Islam was not especially violent comparing to those days. Back in the 7th century AD, religion had a foundational role both for individuals and nations. So nearly every war had a religious context or, at least, having a religion behind a war was a norm.

On the other hand, Mohammad didn't always fight in order to conquer. Most of the marriages he made pursued political goals.


Furtherly, Koran does not approve killing civilians, children and women as well as destroying civil facilities for military purposes. Thus, the contemporary military Islamists have no excuse even based on their religious writings.
