Protestants are the majority in Northern Ireland, not the minority, and it is they that want Northern Ireland to stay a part of the United Kingdom.
A hung parliament is when no single party wins an overall majority and in order to form a government a coalition is formed. Lots of countries have had that situation. Ireland and the United Kingdom are two examples.

...There is no overall ruling party as such in the UK, the party which won the May 2010 election by a narrow majority was the Conservative Party, however, since this majority was so insignificant the Conservatives were forced to form a coalition with the party which came third in the election result, the Liberal-Democratic Party...the party which came second and which is now in opposition is the Labour Party...
There is no such thing as an English government. There is a parliament elected by voters in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is divided into 650 parliamentary constituencies, each of which elects a member to the House of Commons, the lower house of the British Parliament. Normally, one of the main political parties is able to secure a majority of seats in the house and the leader of that party is then invited to form a government by the monarch, with him or her self as The Prime Minister. In the 2010 general election, the Conservative Party had a simple majority but did not have an overall majority ahead of all of the other parties. In view of this, they entered into a coalition with the Liberal Democrat Party and the Conservative leader, David Cameron, was invited to serve.

The United States and The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom, including England, has a parliamentary government. In this type of government the people elect representatives who make up the legislative branch of the government. A Prime Minister from the majority party becomes the executive of the government. The Prime Minister is not directly elected by the voters. The majority party appoints the PM. With the PM and his party in the majority it's easier to pass legislation.
