A secret telegram sent from the German government to the Mexican government suggesting that Mexico attack the U.S. and recover their territory previously lost to the U.S., with the intention that such a war would prevent the U.S. from joining the war in Europe.
The telegram was intercepted by the British via a tap on the transatlantic cable and broke the cypher. They passed a copy of the decrypted telegram to the U.S. government, which was one of the reasons that the U.S. entered the war in Europe against Germany.

The Zimmerman note was a coded telegram sent by the German Empires' Foreign secretary Arthur Zimmerman to the ambassador in Washington, D.C. The Ambassador would then send it on to the German ambassador in Mexico on Zimmerman's request. The note was supposedly a proposal of a military alliance against the United States, and promised aid to help Mexico territories it had lost in the 19th century to America.
