Yes specifically the Deltoid. The reason for this is that the muscle is the perfect size for absorption. The other muscles groups are larger and will not allow the medication the quicker absorption time.

There are actually 4 different forms of the vaccination. The DTaP (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) is injected into to the arm or thigh. The DT (tetanus and diphtheria) is also injected into the arm or thigh. Finally, the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) and the T vaccine (tetanus only) is generally only injected into the upper arm.

Can tetanus injections be given in the butt?

Yes, you can. Any large muscle, such as the upper arm, outer thigh, or gluteus maximus (buttocks) can be used for the intramuscular injections of flu vaccines. However, many people avoid this location for flu shots since the site can be tender and muscles sore for some time after the injection due to local reaction to the injected vaccine. It is easier to avoid hurting the site of injection when it is in the arm instead of the buttocks that could be uncomfortable sitting down.

What if you miss a tetanus booster for 20 years?

Get a new one. They are only good for 10 years and usually the only side effect is a very sore arm. You can get tetanus even from a good jab with a needle, so don't risk it.

How long does tetanus shot pain last?

You will be fine after 10 minutes, but the section of the arm will be sore for a few days. Tetanus shots are really easy. I just wear a racer back tank with really cool roomy armholes. The doctor usually asks if I'm right or left handed-I'm right handed, so he puts the tetanus on my left arm. I just sit bravely on the patients table in shorts and tank top and put my left hand on my hip so the doctor can easily see my deltoid muscle just under my skin up high by my shoulder. The doctor dabs my tan sleeveless muscly left arm with alcohol up high by my shoulder-the alcohol really feels cool on my warm skin. Then he points the tetanus needle straight down at my left arm up high by my shoulder. I feel a quick stick like a dart as the needle goes deep in my left deltoid muscle. Then I feel a hard push and a deep tight muscly ache as the doctor puts the tetanus on my muscle. Then he pulls the needle out of my muscle, and it's all over. I just feel a tight muscly ache in my left arm up by my shoulder for a day or so. But in a tank top with roomy arm holes I have alot of free easy arm movement so I move my left arm as much as I can to work the tetanus into my muscle. It only takes the doctor about 5 seconds to stick the needle in my muscle, push the tetanus on my muscle, and pull the needle out. Tetanus is good for 5 years or so,which is really great cuz I hate getting tetanus shots! Omigod! they hurt!
