The Core i7-940XM is still a decent processor as is the Quadro FX 1800M graphics chipset. However, this machine is not going to be wonderful if your intention is for gaming. The Core i7 is four years old and shows its age when compared to the newer Core i7 CPUs that have been released since its reaching the market and the Quadro line of nVidia products has never been intended for gaming, instead being targeted at professional workstations designed for accelerating CAD and digital media development. The nVidia GeForce family is what you want if your intent is to play games with this laptop.
If you want to give your machine any sort of boost, you might check the performance of the Samsung SSD that came with the machine and see whether it is slowing down with age and wear (as SSDs do wear out, in case you didn't know) and swap out or add more RAM if appropriate. The machine came with only 8GB of DDR3-1333 and the motherboard can handle up to two sticks of 8GB DDR3-1600. (Yes, once again Dell cut corners by slowing down the machine by stuffing in slower RAM and still selling at a premium price. This is one of the multitude of reasons that I never recommend Dell.)
Beyond that, there is little that can be done to upgrade it since it is a laptop. The best option for improved performance for gaming would be to get a new machine from HP, Lenovo, or Gigabyte. Brands that I recommend avoiding are Dell (as already mentioned), Alienware (owned by Dell and their quality has diminished since the buy-out several years ago), Gateway/eMachines, and PowerSpec (MicroCenter's house brand). Gigabyte has a very good line of gaming rigs and they can be ordered custom-made through http://www.xoticpc.comif you wish to do so.
