If the car is designed to be driven on the right side of the road, when you stand in front of the car and look at the driver, the driver will be on your right. Left and right sides of the car are determined by sitting in the driver seat. I usually just refer to the car sides as driver side or passenger side so as not to confuse anyone.

Which is the right hand side of the car?

The right hand side of a vehicle, by convention, is the side to the right of the driver while seated facing the normal direction of travel. Consequently, a person observing a front-of-vehicle engine compartment while standing in front of the vehicle would have the right hand side of the vehicle to his left.

If you are facing the stern of a boat and turned 90 degrees to your right you'll then be facing the starboard side of the boat?

Ha! You made that one tough...you didn't say whether you were in the boat facing the stern, or outside the boat facing the stern. Anyway, it's easy. If you're in the boat and you're facing forward (the direction of travel), the right side of the boat is the starboard side. Think of a car driving down the highway (in the US), the passenger is on the starboard side and the driver is on the port side.
