"The French Revolution" The middle class was influenced by the theories of Enlightenment and was familiar with the recent American revolution. They took the idea of freedom and equality to heart and therefore started fighting for it..In 1789 financial times were hard in France. The peasants were upset that the nobles were living lavish collecting taxes, while they suffered. The prices on food were rising and people were starving. The France social system was out of date and consisted of three classes. The first class was the clergy, they paid no taxes and led a good easy life. The second class were the nobles, the nobles were separated into two groups, the noble of the robe, and the noble of the sword. The third class was the largest class, this class was separated into three groups. Life did get easier but the people sharing the burden on the taxes. They also wanted a guarantee by the government to give them living wages. Man also had the right to enjoy the natural right or the right to property, security and resistance to oppression. On January, 21, 1793 King Louis XVI was guillotined, after being tried for treason and being proven guilty. During the reign of Louis XVI France suffered from constant economic troubles; the country was always in debt because of the present (Louis XVI and his family) and previous royal family's frequent spending on war and luxuries, in 1788 there was a terrible harvest leaving almost 80% of the population poor, starving and unemployed because of unbalanced social classes. For example; during the American Revolution Louis' government gave substantial financial assistance to the Americans. When the Estates General met in May, 1789, the king insisted that it had one purpose: to solve the financial problems of the government. Although his plans did not turn out as he had hoped and the third estate left the Estate General and later became the National Assembly. The National Assembly became a powerful group that achieved many great things for France. There were three main reasons that help asses why King Louis XVI was executed in 1793; the Jacobins gained more power, Austria and Prussia threatened to attack France, and the Vendee revolt. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821 C.E.) was born during the time of the French Revolution, which ultimately affected his goals and eventual leadership of France. Napoleon directed many successful campaigns to expand the empire and allies of France from 1796-1812 C.E. Napoleon was not merely a "child" of the French Revolution, he was the French Revolution. Napoleon came into power when he became a general in King Louis XVI's army at the young age of 24. In 1798 C.E. he attempted to gain access to the Red Sea. Meanwhile, the Committee of Public Safety's war effort was realizing unimaginable success. French armies, led by young general Napoleon Bonaparte, were making progress in nearly every direction. Napoleon's forces drove through Italy and reached as far as Egypt before facing a deflating defeat. In the face of this rout, and having received word of political upheavals in France, Napoleon returned to Paris. He arrived in time to lead a coup against the Directory In 1799, eventually stepping up and naming himself "first consul"-effectively, the leader of France. With Napoleon at the helm, the Revolution ended, and France entered a fifteen-year period of military rule. It was a failure in some was because of the changes of regime.
