The geographic center of the United States is a point approximately 20 mi (32 km) north of Belle Fourche, South Dakota (Lat. 44 58 02.07622(N) Long. 103 46 17.60283(W)). The addition of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959 moved the geographic center of the United States approximately 550 mi (885 km) Northwest by north.
The true site is located in private pastureland and is marked with a red fence post stuck into cement. However, the town of Belle Fourche has been designated as Center of the Nation City, so a monument is located in the town of Belle Fourche, near the Center of the Nation Visitor Center.
